The civic and shopping heart of the island: Marina Bay's skyline, the UNESCO-listed Botanic Gardens, Orchard Road and the three historic quarters of Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam. Most first-time visitors spend the bulk of their time here.

Worth your time
- Marina Bay & Gardens by the Bay — Skyline walk, Supertree Grove light show at night; the domes are air-conditioned refuges on a hot afternoon.
- Chinatown — Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Sri Mariamman Temple, hawker food at Maxwell and Chinatown Complex.
- Little India — Tekka Centre, Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Mustafa Centre open late.
- Kampong Glam — Sultan Mosque, Haji Lane and Arab Street; cover shoulders and knees to enter the mosque.
- Orchard Road — Two kilometres of malls; an easy wet-weather plan as they connect underground.
- Singapore Botanic Gardens — Free entry, opens at 5 am; go early or after 5 pm to avoid the midday heat.
Getting around
Everything here is on the MRT; the Downtown, North–South and East–West lines cross the district. Malls and the underground links between them make this the easiest zone in a downpour.
Questions
Is central Singapore walkable?
Yes, but the heat is the constraint rather than distance. Plan outdoor walks before 10 am or after 5 pm, and use malls and the Marina Bay underpasses to cross the hottest stretches.
Where is the best view of the skyline?
From the Marina Bay waterfront promenade at Merlion Park looking towards Marina Bay Sands, or from the Gardens by the Bay side looking back at the financial district after dark.
